NSTRUMENTATION FOR High Altitude Air Density Measurements,Howlett,Leland C. Westlund,Clay D. Scientific-1, UTEC-UA-72-166F19628-69-C-0158AF-6690, AF-5710669001, 571001AFCRL70-0323atmospheric sounding, optical instruments, ionosphere, density, photomultiplier tubes, signal-to-noise ratio, airglow, lasers, numerical analysis, sounding rockets, rayleigh scattering, spectrum analyzerslaser beams, light scattering, atmospheric densityMeasurement of high altitude air density by means of a sounding rocket containing instruments to measure the intensity of light scattered from a segment of a light beam projected from a modulated onboard source is investigated. Based upon a partially successful flight of such a payload and theoretical considerations, the technique does appear to be fundamentally sound but requires significant design improvements to operate successfully at altitudes between 100 and 175 kilometers.
