Abstract:
The report considers the signal strength at a point in a subterranean waveguide and compares it with the noise one might expect. Noise that is owing to atmospheric and subsurface thermal sources. The signal is due to a transmitting antenna located in the waveguide. A prediction is thus made on signal-to-noise ratio at the receiving point. The prediction permits an engineering estimate of the likely distance one could communicate via this subterranean waveguide, based on assumed waveguide parameters. Author
