Abstract:
The principal portion of the present report consists of a survey of proposed applications of materials having both magnetic and ferroelectric ordering andor displaying magnetoelectric coupling effects, together with an assessment of the extent to which any of these applications is feasible using presently known materials. Novel, and in some ways superior, devices of the signal-processing type such as amplitude or phase modulators operating at frequencies from microwave to visible are possible in principle, although considerable further experimental work is necessary before it can even be shown that effective specific devices can be designed. Magnetoelectric memory devices do not at present seem very feasible. A brief survey of other work on this program is also included.
