Abstract:
SPECIFICALLY, AN IMPROVEMENT IN THE FLASHTUBE ARC COLUMN SPACIAL UNIFORMITY. Approaches being undertaken to achieve a uniform radiating volume are discussed. A theoretical study of the arc compares rates of growth and discusses oscillations that may appear in capillary lamps. Preliminary acoustical analysis has not revealed the presence of a radial oscillation. Experimental data relating to radiance, cross-sectional profiles, and diameters versus pressure in an unconfined geometry are presented. A fluorescence meter has been constructed and will be used to evaluate small-bore lamps of various constructions. The value of diffusing and fluorescing envelopes is discussed, together with the design of specialized driving circuitry. The program for the second tri-annual period is summarized. Author
