Abstract:

The purpose of this project was to augment the existing programs within malaria research by providing expertise in the area of quantatative structure activity relationships and the development of the chemical structuresub-structure searching computer programs. The methodology employed was essentially that of applying the laws of mathematics, physics, and chemistry to the problem of selecting molecules for synthesis and evaluation which would have relatively high probability for success as antimalarials. Many compounds were suggested and they are included in this report. As a biproduct of the main thrust of drug design, insight was gained regarding the mechanism of action of antimalarials and these results are summarized here and published in the scientific literature.
