A hydrogen lamp with a cooled LiF window was constructed. Gas mixtures of Ar H2, He H2, and Ar He H2 were used in the source. The Ar H2 mixtures yielded a Lyman beta radiation output which was about a factor of two over the He H2 mixtures. The ternary mixtures lay in between these limits. It was experimentally found that in the binary mixtures the maximum Lyman beta radiation output occurred at the same H2 flow as the maximum Lyman alpha radiation output. No simple relationship was found for the ternary mixture. Degradation of Lyman beta radiation transmission due to condensation on the cooled LiF window made this type of lamp unsuitable for use after 30 minutes to 1 hour. Author
