Abstract:

Present methods of inspecting large diameter cannon threads require the use of heavy ring and plug thread gages. Because of their weight and size, application of these gages to inspect a part is a cumbersome task. The gages as they are presently designed require 6 to 13 months to manufacture. Reliable inspection measurements are difficult to obtain due to the heavy mass of metal the user must maneuver in order to properly assemble the gage to the part. Substitution of lightweight composite material for steel in the manufacture of large inspection thread gages would provide thread gages that are readily attainable and easier to apply for accurate and dependable measurements.
