A halo of fluorescence surrounding sparks produced in gases such as SiF4, CF4, BF3, CCl2F2, and hydrocarbons by the output of a TEA CO2 laser was investigated. It is concluded that the fluorescence results from molecular dissociation at the plasma-neutral gas boundary. Author
