Family Communication About Plans for Natural and Nuclear Disasters

The report summarizes how 65 husband-wife couples with children discussed their plans for responding to natural tornado and nuclear disaster situations. The couples were interviewed in their homes, and their discussions were taperecorded and later transcribed. A summary of their reactions to sharing home basements, how they would get alerted of a disaster, and how they would cope with the disaster is presented. The responses are grouped according to the saliency and awareness of the issues. Suggestions for improving the Agencys information campaigns for disaster situations conclude the report.
