Abstract:
A tunnel diode oscillator is used to obtain accurate measurements of the capacitance of the plasma sheath surrounding a cylindrical Langmuir probe in a collisionless plasma. The probe is biased in the ion saturation current region with probe potentials ranging from 17 to 220 V. A. comparison of these results with similar data obtained using a simple LC resonant circuit is made and shows the technique to be a simple, precise diagnostic tool which should be generally applicable both for laboratory and upper atmospheric plasmas.
