Abstract:
This report describes what the author believes are the most significant advancements in welding technology that have occurred since 1960. New processes that have been introduced plus significant improvements in relatively old processes are covered. The text is organized on the basis of fusion-welding, resistance-welding, solid-state welding, and brazing process characteristics. Among the fusion processes considered are plasma-arc, electron-beam, pulsed-current gas-tungsten and gas-metal ARC, ELECTROSLAG, AND LASER WELDING. Important processes discussed in the other categories include spot-weld adhesive bonding, friction welding, diffusion bonding, and explosive welding. Brazing developments are concentrated on applications of superalloys, refractory metals, titanium, and aluminum. A minor part of the developmental effort and utilization that has gone into or resulted from the welding advancements made in recent years has been referenced however there has been no intent to be comprehensive. Instead, an effort has been made to demonstrate the results that can be obtained from the proper use of each process through description of highlights. In addition, some of the problems that one must consider before he can find the proper combination of materials and new procedures for a specific application are noted. Author, modified-PL
