A study of polar cap upper atmospheric phenomenology was conducted to provide background information on the state of polar cap research and to investigate some global effects of polar cap disturbances. The results of a survey and evaluation of the literature on polar cap research, mainly from the international Geophysical Year through 1971, were documented in an extensive bibliography of titles with section summaries of the work referenced and in a four-volume bibliography with abstracts. Possible effects of polar cap disturbances were found in wave-like disturbances of the 5577 A emission intensity observed from the AFCRL Airglow Station at Sacramento Peak, New Mexico, on ten nights between December 1956 and June 1962.
