Abstract:

An experimental investigation has been made of the mean flow characteristics of air jets issuing from rectangular outlets into a still atmosphere. Both nozzles and flat-plate orifices having aspect ratios ld of 40 and 100 have been tested. Free jet data is compared with data from the jets confined by plane walls parallel to the jet axis on only two sides of the jet. Considerable differences in half-velocity widths and peak velocity decay are found to be caused by this partial confinement. Jet momentum flux and mass entrainment are less seriously affected.
