The Use of E. M. Accelerators in High Pressure Test Facilities.

The performance of steady-state axisymmetric accelerators is investigated under the assumption that they tend to operate in a minimum potential mode. The existence of a critical or Alfven exhaust velocity and of a critical mass flow rate is shown to follow logically from this assumption. The concept of Alfven velocity is extended to include the effects of multiple ionization and or multiple species in the propellant exhaust. Experimental data is correlated using expressions derived from the analysis. It is concluded that this simple general approach explains first order effects quite well in electromagnetic accelerators.
