Abstract:

Results of experiments on thermal self-ignition of hydrogen diffusion flames in supersonic flows are reported where ignition is aided by precombustion. Especially prereactions which are induced catalytically prove to favour ignition conditions. As far as scramjet propulsion is concerned, one can hope to extend the application range of thermal self-ignition and thus to avoid losses as they are caused by the well-known auxiliary devices for flame stabilization.
