Effects of Information Load, Location, and Mode of Observation on Detecting and Identifying Brief Targets

With shorter exposure times, the target brightness needed for detection or identification increased as exposure time decreased. Increasing information load and randomizing target location raised brightness requirements for identification. The results suggest that operator performance might be improved significantly by special training to increase the observers area of attention and his capacity to process visual information.
