Abstract:
The response of an inhomogeneous plasma to strong, initial impulse electric field excitation has been studied by means of a sheet model computer simulation. Runs were made for both cold and warm plasmas having a cosine like density background. Strong nonlinear effects are observed, as well as phenomena distinctly attributable to the inhomogeneity. These include a non-monotonic voltage decay rate, complex mode structure of the electric fields, and strong density peaks. An increase in thermalization occurs in all cases. Author
