Abstract:

The breakdown voltage of suspensions was measured in systems in which the liquid phases were transformer oil, tap water, and H2O. The dispersed phases were quartz sand and sulfide ore with a particle size smaller than 0.074 micrometers and glass spheres with a particle size of 0.035-0.070 micrometers. Thermal polarization caused a space discharge which distorted the internal field. Because of it the breakdown voltage for a gap between 2 spheres is likely to be smaller than for a gap between a point and a plate. At certain concentrations of the solid phase the electrical resistance attains a constant value by virtue of dynamic bridging systems formed between the electrodes. Author
