Abstract:
A modified free-flooded piezoelectric cylinder transducer was designed, built and tested that provides a source level of 85 dB re 1 mu Pa.mV over a frequency range of 2.4 - 9.6 kHz. Actual dimensions of the transducer are these outside diameter, 4.5 inches wall thickness of ceramic, .25 inches and height of cylinder, 5 inches. Conventional design was modified by replacing half the staves in an all-ceramic cylinder with lead staves. The modified cylinder has a fundamental radial resonance of less than half the frequency of a conventional all-ceramic cylinder of the same size. In addition, the modified cylinder offers a larger bandwidth than does any previous conventional design. Beam patterns are typical of free-flooded ring design and are omnidirectional in the horizontal plane, perpendicular to the cylinder axis, and ellipitical in the vertical plane. Author
