A phenomenological criterion for uniaxial yield of ductile materials is presented. The criterion is based on the occurrence of a detectable extremum in the deformation induced temperature-time curve. Experimental evidence obtained from test of mild 1020 steel substantiate the validity of the criterion and provide information on the manner in which Poissons ratio changes from its elastic value to its incompressible value during elastic-plastic transition.
