Abstract:

Short-term exposure of summer acclimatized meadow voles Microtus pennsylvanicus to moderate cold 15C does not have an effect on the rate of in vivo protein synthesis in several tissues studied. Winter acclimatization increases protein synthesis in liver, small intestine and brown fat, but cold exposure of winter voles immediately reduces synthesis in liver and small intestine to summer levels. In vivo DNA synthesis in liver, small intestine and skeletal muscle is depressed by short-term cold exposure of summer acclimatized voles and by winter acclimatization. DNA synthesis in brown fat is immediately stimulated by cold exposure of both summer and winter voles, and is not greatly influenced by seasonal acclimatization. Author
