The technique described forms the basis of an investigation pertinent to the partial structure analysis of tricalcium aluminate and the calcium aluminoferrite phases present in portland cement. For certain elements of low atomic number, the wave length of the characteristic X-radiation is influenced by the coordination number number of nearest neighbors of the site occupied by the element. A technique for determining the coordination number of aluminum ions using this fact is described, and the results obtained from examining several materials of widely varying composition are reported.
