Abstract:
Experimental thin membrane type displays of cholesteric liquid crystals for the display of infrared laser beams have been developed. Both experiment and theoretical analysis demonstrates that there is a trade-off between rise time, decay time, resolution and sensitivity, with membrane thickness and surface cooling the principal limiting parameters. A new type of display in which the liquid crystal is deposited on a semiinfinite block of material shows promise as a suitable display for applications in which the incident power is a few wattssq cm or larger.
