Abstract:
The design of skimmers has been re-examined with respect to the production of nozzle beams of optimum intensity and collimation. The geometric parameters studied include the skimmer diameter, lip radius, and skimmer length as well as the internal and external cone angles. Irrespective of the state of rarefaction of the incoming flow, a slender skimmer of sufficient length appears to be most desirable for the attainment of intense beams of near-isentropic properties.
