The terminal impedances of 3 and 4-foot packset whip antennas were measured in the 30 to 76 MHz frequency range under the actual operating field environment. These results, along with a discussion of the significant factors which affect antenna impedance and efficiency are presented in this report. A description and analysis of the r-f measurement techniques and equipment are included. Measured results indicate that the greatest environmental influence on the packset whip antenna terminal impedance is caused by the operator position and the height of the packset above ground. A pronounced change in antenna impedance was found when the operator position changed from standing, to kneeling, to prone or the radio was placed directly on the ground. Other environmental conditions were found to have only relatively small effect. Author
