Work on this contract is aimed at the development of a new type of electronically tunable optical filter. The basic idea of this filter is to use collinear acousto-optic diffraction in an optically anisotropic media. A crystal orientation is chosen such that an incident optical signal of one polarization is diffracted into the orthogonal polarization by the acoustic beam. Progress on this contract has been the construction and first experimental demonstration of a tunable acousto-optic filter, and the growth and demonstration of the use of Calcium Molybdate CaMoO4 for acousto-optic applications.
