The paper is a study of the responses of military enlisted personnel to variations in military and civilian income alternatives. The study compares responses of groups of individuals by race, education, and mental ability to factors influencing their choice of a military career. Source data for the study were reenlistment decisions of approximately one-quarter million first-term enlisted personnel in all branches of service. The paper also contains a discussion of the shape of the supply curve for career personnel and the impact of an all volunteer force on the composition of the career force. Author
