Abstract:

Scientific inventory management generally bases the calculation of EOQ Economic Order Quantity and safety level upon item characteristics and the probabilistic nature of demand. The VOSL Variable Operating and Safety Level model for Navy retail inventories was designed based on simplifications of these techniques thus allowing implementation, beginning in 1964, at individual stock points with limited data processing capabilities. However, VOSL is designed to operate based on the specification of an authorized investment level and the number of orders which can be processed by a stock point. Within these constraints, the VOSL program determines appropriate operating and safety levels which maximize requisition effectiveness. Author
