Abstract:
A class of nonparametric detectors for detecting M-ary time varying signals in the presence of intersymbol interference and additive noise of unknown distribution is formulated, evaluated and compared to optimum Gaussian detector. The proposed detectors use a transformation of the sample observations to calculate a test statistic M. A decision method based on the value of the test statistic is devised by defining appropriate thresholds. An analytical expression for the averag probability of error is presented and the method of calculating optimum thresholds that minimize the probability of error is also developed. The probability of error obtained is independent of the form of the noise distribution but depends on the value of the density function at the median. This detector requires independent samples. The performance of these detectors is independent of the noise distributions. An example of a ternary signal set is worked out for illustration. Author
