Results obtained from studying plasmas by means of mass and optical spectroscopy are summarized. The measuring method consisted of measuring the time dependence of the density of ions and that of the intensity of spectral lines and bands emitted during the plasma decay period. The plasmas were produced in neon, nitrogen, and in helium-nitrogen, neon-nitrogen and helium-hydrogen mixtures. Production and loss mechanisms of ions were established, while the origin of the emission of light during the plasma decay period was determined. Author
