The report describes a method to determine fly ash particle size. The rate at which a particle falls freely in a liquid medium is related to its density and diameter, the specific gravity and viscosity of the liquid, and the length of time it falls. After short intervals of time, each particle in the medium attains a terminal velocity, which is its maximum rate of fall. In the method, water is used as the sedmientation fluid. Waiting times are computed for a given density for 0-5 micron, 5-10, 10-20, and 20-40 microns diameter ranges. The fluid above a preselected point is drawn into a reservoir by the application of vacuum and the suspension filtered. The entire operation is repeated a number of times for each particle size range. Author
