Abstract:

Recent studies have revealed that the dog heart fails 5-9 hours after endotoxin injection. Digoxin administered after endotoxin injections has been noted to provide functional protection for the heart. In this study, the effect of 7-9 hours of endotoxin shock on myocardial ultrastructure was manifested primarily by severe mitochondrial edema and disruption and the accumulation of intramitochondrial granules. The ultrastructural mitochondrial appearance proved to be a reliable morphologic lesions was effected by early digoxin treatment. The precise mechanism by which digoxin prevented the cardiac lesion is unknown. Author
