The report examines empirically and experientially the process of becoming a policeman. Specifically, the study documents attitude changes reported by police recruits as they moved through the series of experiences and adventures associated with their early careers. Questionnaires were administered longitudinally and cross-sectionally to police officers in a large, urban police department. The questionnaires focused upon the motivation, commitment and satisfaction of patrolmen. Viewed through the expectancy theory perspective, these attitudes represent linkages by which people connect themselves to their employing organization. Author
