Abstract:

One of the simplest nonlinear effects which is capable of saturating the growth of a linearly unstable wave or spectrum of waves is resonant mode coupling. The process of resonant mode coupling is not itself a dissipation mechanism but simply carries mode energy from an unstable to a stable region of wave number space. When the rate of energy influx from the linear instability is balanced by the rate of out flow from mode coupling one has reached a steady state. In the paper the authors investigate a simple, one-dimensional model for instability saturation by mode coupling. Author
