The report deals with the problem of finding the vibration of a foundation block test pad imbedded in, or resting on, an elastic substratum, when seismic waves traveling in the elastic substrate impinge upon the foundation block. Chapter 1 deals with the situation where a rigid block is welded to the surface of an elastic half-space. The problem is set up mathematically as a system of integro-differential equations in one space dimension and time. A numerical scheme is set up to solve the system step-by-step in time for arbitrary, time dependent, incident radiation. In particular the incident field may represent body waves or Rayleigh waves. Computer programs which execute the numerical scheme are listed and their function described in Appendices to Chapter 1. In Chapter 2 an analytical treatment is given for the problem where incident SH waves impinge upon a rigid strip. Asymptotic formulae valid when the width of the strip is small compared with a wavelength are given. Author
