Research was conducted on the physics of the adhesive joint. The first problems investigated concerned the nature of the bond responsible for adhesion and the role of surface energy, wetting and surface tension. The origin of the high joint strength obtainable with brittle adhesives was explored. A mechanism for interrupting the propagation of cracks within the adhesive was sought. In order to study the mechanisms of crack propagation in polymeric materials of which the majority of adhesives consist, a broadly based study of the fracture of polymers was undertaken.
