Compounds containing both S and P, giving good anticorrosion and detergency properties to lubricating oils and having good compatibility with other additives, were prepared by treating dialkyl dithiophosphates RO2PS SH with unsaturated compounds, e.g. MeCN, Me methacrylate, or vinyl acetate to give trialkyl dithiophosphates. They were also prepared by polymerizing paraffin or kerosene thermal cracking products, the residue from petroleum cracking, low molecular weight polymers, or isobutylene, treating the polymers with P2S5, and converting the products to their Ca, Ba, or Zn salts. A third method was by converting mixtures of dithiophosphate and dithiophosphonate diesters prepared from P2S5 and octyl alcohol, alkylphenols, and or polymer distillates to their An or Ba salts.
