Abstract:
Using molecular beam analysis, the kinetics and mechanisms of the reactions of atomic fluorine with CF3I and CCl3Br have been investigated in a fast-flow reactor. Direct observation of perhalomethyl radicals and lack of detection of displaced halogen atoms proves conclusively that both of these reactions proceed primarily by abstraction, rather than displacement, of a halogen atom. In the CCl3Br system, successive atom-switching reactions rapidly convert CCl3 to its fluorinated analogs. The rate constants are given. Author
