Abstract:
The possibility of using tunable laser light to channel a chemical reaction into a direction difficult to achieve otherwise is discussed. The necessary laser powers are given in terms of the desired overall efficiency. The relative advantages of operating the lasers in pulses, compared to c.w. operation, are discussed quantitatively. A simple-minded treatment of the effects of spectral line broadening natural, Doppler, pressure and rotational is also given. A numerical example is worked out, to show that a two stage, two-laser process is feasible with present laser technology. Author
