Wind Excited Vibration of Square Section Beam and Suspended Cable

The self-excited oscillation of a square section vertical cantilever beam and a square section sagging suspended cable in a uniform wind stream was investigated theoretically and experimentallly. Experimental quasi-static representation of aerodynamic forces was used to determine the responses theoretically. The excitation is due to negative damping type aerodynamic forces and the amplitude is limited as the forces become nonlinear. The governing equations were reduced to ordinary differential equations by Galerkins method and steady state solutions were determined by harmonic balance technique.
