The design and construction of electrochemical power sources continues to be something of an empirical art. Non-aqueous electrolytes and solid electrodes have been studied. The behavior of solid electrodes was examined with emphasis on the specific characteristics of the electrode material in determining the nature of the procedure of electrode reactions, on the nature of films formed at solid electrodes, and on the structure of the electrical double-layer. Non-aqueous solvents of potential utility for electrolyte systems were studied from the viewpoints of efficacy as ionizing solvents, useful temperature range, and synergistic effects of mixed solvents. Studies of electrode processes in non-aqueous solvents were also carried out.
