Abstract:
Instabilities which occur in shock wave or impact experiments are noted to be of two kinds. In one-dimensional experiments the wave may break up into multiple waves due to plastic yield or phase transitions. The indication that such an instability will occur is normally in a cusp in the P-v relation for the material. In two-dimension problems such as impact of two plates at some non-zero angle, ripples in the impact surface may develop. These may be related to jetting effects at the interface. Author
