Abstract:

Using the theory of electromagnetic wave propagation in optically birefringent and magnetically ordered materials, a simple experimental method for the measurement of the intrinsic Faraday rotation in such materials is presented. A study of the Faraday rotation in ErFeO3 as a function of temperature from ambient down to spin reorientation region 90-100K at a wavelength of 6070A is carried out. The intrinsic Faraday rotation at ambient is found to be 7600 degcm. It increases gradually with decreasing temperature and drops to zero in the spin reorientation region. Author
