Biisoquinolinium dication I produces a bright flash of light when made basic. This could have uses as an emergency escape light. The chemistry involves reduction of I to I, an olefin, by base. The I reacts with O2 to form HOOH and to reform I. Finally I reacts with HOO- to give biisoquinolones in an excited state and this emits a violet light. Author
