Abstract:

A geologic reconnaissance was made in the Gold Meadows areas of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commissions Nevada Test Site to establish the suitability of the area for the Project PRE-SCHOONER tests. The area is characterized by a large intrusive mass of granitic rock of Cretaceous or Tertiary age surrounded by Cambrian quartzites and Tertiary volcanic tuffs. A series of sites was established in areas that comprise relatively low relief, thin soil cover, and granitic rock that was apparently not excessively weathered or jointed. The subsurface conditions at each of the sites were investigated by either shallow exploratory drill holes or relatively deep, continuously cored, 6-in.-diameter borings. The granitic rock was found to be badly decomposed, highly jointed, and faulted to a minimum depth of 92.3 ft, thereby necessitating elimination of the area from further consideration as a site for the PRE-SCHOONER tests.
