Abstract:

Existing criteria reflected in military specifications and standards and design guides are inadequate for VSTOL aircraft. The present criteria for helicopter design and testing are those which evolved and have been used over several years for U. S. Air Force fixed-wing aircraft. The helicopter takeoff and landing environment, particularly airborne particle concentration, is markedly more severe than that for fixed-wing aircraft. This report presents data and conclusions which can be used to establish design and testing criteria for future VSTOL aircraft.
