Thermomechanical Behavior of a Poly(norbornadiene)

A high temperature polyolefin, synthesized cationically from norbornadiene bicycls-2,2,1-heptadiene-2,5, was studied thermomechanically with respect to physical transitions and stability in nitrogen. The glass transition was found to be 320C, the highest known for a purely hydrocarbon addition polymer. The thermomechanical technique of Torsional Braid Analysis, Thermogravimetric Analysis, Differential Thermal Analysis, Infrared studies, and solubility studies were used to investigate the sequential events of the glass transition and degradation.
