Collisions of impurity species with optically oriented helium metastable atoms in a flowing afterglow yield ensembles of excited atomic and molecular ions by Penning ionization. Conservation of both the longitudinal and transverse components of the spin angular moment in the collision has been demonstrated. Radiofrequency spectroscopy of the excited ions yielded radiative lifetimes. The authors have also demonstrated that the excited ions are coherently excited, and they have derived theoretically the conditions for the coherence transfer. The technique exploited here also can be used to produce beams of polarized ions and electrons for scattering experiments. Also measured was the variation in lifetimes and predissociation probabilities of OH, CH, and NH.
