Ultrasonic velocity measurements are the standard method for the determination of the adiabatic compressibilities of electrolytic solutions and molten salts. The review considers various methods for the measurement of acoustical velocities in such systems, fundamental thermodynamic relationships involving compressibilities and, the interpretation of velocity and compressibility measurements in simple aqueous electrolytes, non-aqueous electrolytes, systems exhibiting chemical equilibrium, and molten salt systems both single and multiple component.
