Abstract:

Equipment was built to measure the Youngs modulus of fibers using ultrasonic pulses. Moduli measured on single straight strands of aluminum and copper wire are in satisfactory agreement with accepted values. Moduli measured on carbon fiber yarns are as much as 45 lower than the static values. This difference arises because the individual filaments in the yarn are not straight but are twisted into a helix.
